On a beautiful sunny morning and as part of our on-going commitment to becoming ‘greener’ we decided to do something that benefited our wider community. As several of our team regularly wild swim, SUP, kayak and sail, it made sense to do a beach clean.
We went to one of our favourite local beaches, Covesea. Whilst this beach is never bad for rubbish as it’s usually quiet, we still found fishing detritus as well as other random bits, such as a burst balloon, clothing and a LOT of tiny pieces of plastic. I’ve been visiting Covesea beach for years, since before we took over managing the Estate. It is off the beaten track and provides glorious views, excellent swimming and plenty of shelter for BBQs.
The most mysterious pieces found were tiny little plastic pipes. There were more than we could collect in a day in an area next to where the path joins the beach. After speaking with a fellow beach cleaner a few days later I discovered that these were actually the plastic stems of q-tips! Thanks goodness the Government banned ‘single use plastics’ with effect from 2022 and these q-tips are now made from biodegradable materials. Xero Waste Scotland have some great advice on using plastic and making positive choice.
It felt good to have picked up what we did though – every little helps as they say.
A big thank you to @surfersagainstsewage for the beach clean kit – much appreciated. We felt like were were able to make a difference together with a national campaign – The Million Mile Clean
