A Gentle Afternoon with Auld Mill Alpacas

Here on Duffus Estate, we’re always delighted to celebrate the wonderful local businesses and experiences that help make Moray such a special place to visit. Recently, we had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with our neighbours at Auld Mill Alpacas—and we’re still smiling about it.

Tucked just a short journey away, Auld Mill Farm is home to a charming herd of alpacas, each with its own personality, quizzical expression, and incredibly soft coat. Whether you’re an animal lover, a keen photographer, or simply someone looking to slow the pace and enjoy the countryside. It’s a place that encourages you to breathe out, relax, and enjoy the gentle company of these curious creatures.

Getting to Know the Herd

After a warm welcome, we had the chance to meet the alpacas up close. Their calm and inquisitive nature makes them wonderful animals to spend time with. Some were shy; others were eager to say hello (especially if treats were involved!).

We learned about each one by name and character. It became clear just how thoughtfully and lovingly they are cared for. There’s something quietly grounding about standing amongst them. We watched them graze, blink slowly in the sunshine, and occasionally—and politely—lean in for a sniff.

A Walk with a View

A highlights of the visit was taking an alpaca for a walk around the peaceful grounds of the farm. The combination of unhurried steps, gentle chatter, and open scenery makes for a wonderfully restorative time—perfect for those interested in alpacas.

And of course, there were plenty of opportunities for photos. Alpacas have a talent for posing without even trying.

Craft, Wool & Warm Souvenirs

Auld Mill also offers beautiful, locally made alpaca wool products. Soft, warm and hypoallergenic, they make thoughtful gifts (or indulgent keepsakes!). There’s a special charm in knowing your scarf or hat came from an alpaca you’ve just spent time with. I couldn’t resist a pair of boot socks, they are my second pair and I absolutely love them, warm, robust and local! Their wee Alpaca Farm Shop is open on request throughout the year.
