Snowmen have been built at Duffus Castle for as long as anyone can remember. Ed’s family always made the most of a good snowy day to trek across the Estate and head to Duffus Castle to build snowmen. There was always fierce competition between the siblings for the most impressive snowman! Similarly, we have continued this tradition and don’t miss a snowy season to go and build our snowmen at Duffus Castle.
Where did snowmen begin?
The history of snowmen stretches back centuries. Originating in regions with cold winters where communities found joy in crafting figures out of snow. Besides, the earliest known reference to snowmen dates back to medieval times in Europe, depicted in artwork and literature. Over time, snowmen became a popular winter pastime. Symbolizing the whimsical side of winter and the creativity of people amidst harsh conditions. Subsequently, in the 19th century, snowmen gained cultural prominence with the spread of holiday traditions and the publication of literature like Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snowman”. Today, snowmen continue to be a cherished part of winter culture worldwide, celebrated in festivals, depicted in art, and enjoyed by all ages as a symbol of seasonal joy and creativity.
