Cultural Heritage of Moray Speyside (part 3) – further afield
Ballindalloch Castle is part of the cultural heritage of Moray Speyside

This the third part in a series of blogs about the culture heritage of Moray Speyside, which Ed’s ancestors are part of. Although these castles are further afield, they are all easily accessible for a day trip from Duffus Estate holiday cottages.

Brodie Castle and Findlater Castle

Venture further into the region’s rich history by discovering the dramatic ruins of Findlater Castle and the timeless elegance of Brodie Castle. Both offer a unique perspective on Scotland’s historical tapestry. Brodie Castle is steeped in over 400 years of history.

This magnificent fortress offers visitors a captivating journey through time. Explore the rich tapestry of the Brodie family’s legacy as you wander through its grand rooms adorned with exquisite art, antique furnishings, and priceless heirlooms. You cannot miss the cultural heritage of Moray Speyside on a visit here.

Lush Gardens

Marvel at the stunning architecture, from the sturdy medieval tower to the elegant Georgian additions, each reflecting a different era of Scottish history. Stroll through the enchanting grounds, where lush gardens and tranquil woodlands provide a peaceful retreat.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a taste of Scottish heritage, Brodie Castle promises an unforgettable experience for all who venture within its storied walls.

We love to go together as a family to Brodie Illuminated, which usually takes place in November. The castle and grounds are creatively illuminated on a different theme each year.

Findlater Castle

Just along the coast from Brodie Castle lies another remarkable historical site: Findlater Castle. Perched dramatically atop rugged cliffs overlooking the Moray Firth. Findlater Castle presents a striking contrast to the more refined elegance of Brodie.

Dating back to the 13th century, this formidable fortress evokes a sense of medieval grandeur and rugged beauty. Visitors to Findlater Castle can explore its weathered ruins, imagining the tales of battles and sieges that once echoed within its walls. It has recently been used as a film set for a Hollywood blockbuster too!

While Brodie Castle offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Scottish nobility, Findlater Castle transports visitors to a time of knights, kings, and daring adventures along the coast.

Together, these two castles provide a fascinating juxtaposition, showcasing the diverse history and landscapes of Scotland’s rich heritage.

Ballindalloch Castle

And finally, take a day trip to the captivating Ballindalloch Castle, which provides insight into the lives of Scottish nobility throughout the centuries. Ballindalloch is often referred to as the “Pearl of the North.” This fairytale-like castle is a prime example of a quintessential Scottish country estate, surrounded by lush gardens and idyllic scenery.

Ballindalloch Castle is still inhabited by the Macpherson-Grant family, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the life of a Scottish noble family. You get a living glimpse of the cultural heritage of Moray Speyside on a visit here.

The castle’s interiors are a treasure trove of art, antique furniture, and historical artifacts. All offering a captivating journey through the centuries. The beautifully manicured gardens are a delight to explore, featuring colourful blooms and serene water features.

There is even a charming café where you can savour traditional Scottish fare. Ballindalloch Castle is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination during your holiday.

Ed had a great day out with Isla and Sam when they were younger. They all thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Ballindalloch Castle.

Fort George a key part of the cultural heritage of Moray Speyside

Just a short journey along the coast, you’ll discover the impressive Fort George, a must-visit attraction for history buffs and enthusiasts of military architecture. Built in the aftermath of the Jacobite uprising in the 18th century, this sprawling fortress is one of the most outstanding examples of military engineering in the United Kingdom. Fort George was designed to secure the Highlands and maintain order in the region, and it continues to fulfil its purpose as an active military base today.

Defensive Walls, Barracks and Museums

Visitors can explore the extensive network of defensive walls, barracks, and museums that offer insight into the fort’s storied past. The views from its ramparts, overlooking the Moray Firth and the distant hills, are simply breath-taking. A visit to Fort George provides a unique opportunity to step back in time and appreciate both the historical significance and architectural grandeur of this impressive stronghold.
